Parent Companies
A parent company is a firm that owns or controls other firms (called subsidiaries).
Subsidiaries may operate independently of the parent company OR they may be closely linked. Either way it is within the interest of the parent company to promote their subsidiaries through each other. This may be cross media as well (Cross Media Ownership).
Some parent companies also own more than one product within the same media.
Bauer is the parent company of Kerrang and Mojo and this is beneficial because they have dominance in the rock magazine market as they own all of the major magazines.
Another benefit of Bauer being the parent company of Kerrang and Mojo is that Bauer can advertise Kerrang in Mojo magazine, and this can generate more money, as someone who could be reading Kerrang magazine, will go out and buy Mojo magazine because of an advertisement that might catch their attention in Kerrang magazine, so therefore this gives Mojo magazine more exposure to the rock community.
Another major benefit to owning both magazines, is the fact that if one magazine starts dipping in sales, they have a backup magazine in either Mojo or Kerrang, so therefore they are always making money.
In conclusion, Bauer owning Kerrang and Mojo is extremely beneficial for the company as they are always making profit because of their market dominance and always having opportunities to advertise their magazines to the audience.
In a magazine article on kissfm, there are advertisements on the right of the page and also at the top of the webpage.
These advertisements are advertising different magazines, magazines such as Kerrang and Q, and this is obvious evidence of cross media ownership, as Kissfm are advertising a magazine that is for a completely different genre and fan base.
Bauer is using their subsidiaries to promote each other by the use of the internet.
Firstly, they use the internet to their advantage by advertising a music website, on another music website, so their subsidiaries are always being promoted, even if the website they're advertising on, is not the same genre of music, or have the same fan base as the actual music they're trying to promote.
No, I don't think the audience are made aware of the parent company ownership simply because it's bad for business.
I think this because, if the audience were to know that Kerrang, Kiss, and Mojo were owned by the same company, they would feel that they are maybe getting the same opinions and ideas in each magazine, that each magazine wouldn't be entirely different, and therefore this would put off the audience from buying any Bauer owned magazines.
